Our “why”
THE PROBLEM
For most of a century, we have built cities following a deeply unsustainable development pattern – urban sprawl. That is, the expansion of low-density development over large areas of land, putting long distances between homes, stores and areas of employment and creating a dependency on private automobiles. No matter how well-intentioned, it’s undeniable this pattern of development has had enormous environmental, social and economic consequences – from deforestation and climate change, to social isolation and crushing financial burdens.
The evidence is overwhelming and conclusive – we need to change.
A BETTER WAY
The answer doesn’t come from electric cars, bullet trains or “smart cities”. It’s not a new technology or even a new way of doing things. The answer lies with living the way people in cities have lived for most of human history – in compact, mixed-use neighbourhoods. That is, living in neighbourhoods of moderate density (like townhouses and low-rise apartments) with small shops within short walking distance. Where there is an emphasis on the public spaces (engaging sidewalks, parks, plazas, etc.), not just private spaces.
In compact, mixed-use neighbourhoods sustainable transportation flourishes. Walking and cycling are quick, convenient and fun. Transit is frequent and inexpensive. There are a wide range of car-share vehicles sprinkled throughout the neighbourhood, although there are far fewer cars actually on the road (why own a car when the alternatives are so good?). Everything you need is close to home and your journeys around town are more fun and better for the earth.
These communities recognize the importance of nature to our health and well-being, providing a rich green environment blended with our built environment. These communities are made at a human-scale, proportionate to the size of a person. Nothing makes us feel small. Instead of sprawling suburbs, towering skyscrapers and clamorous highways, there are modest multi-family homes, busy shops and calm streets.
Shifting toward compact, mixed-use neighbourhoods won’t solve all our problems but it does provide the best solution to a wide range of challenges, and offers a happier, healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. For the sake of our health, well-being and that of future generations, it’s a change we have to make.
URBAN THRIVE
It all starts with having more people in our established neighbourhoods. Riders for the bus. Shoppers for the corner store. Taxpayers for public amenities. Friends for the block party. This must be our first step.
We must also recognize that change cannot happen without consideration of the people who already live in these communities. Every community has a history and identity that should be respected.
Urban Thrive exists to accelerate this transition – to be the catalyst for change. We build modest density housing (townhomes and low-rise apartments) and mixed-use projects (shops and residential) in established single-family neighbourhoods. We do this in a way that respects the existing character and scale, so residents see their neighbourhood growing and evolving – not being replaced. By creating car-free housing, we not only provide a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle but create homes that fit in seamlessly, without parking concerns or congestion.
We aim to make Victoria a model of sustainable urban development. To inspire other builders, communities and cities across North America to follow in our footsteps. Through example, we hope to change the world.
